Pumps for Exclusive Pumping
Exclusive pumping refers to a breastfeeding method where you pump breast milk exclusively (without breastfeeding directly) to feed your baby.1,2,3 For exclusive pumping, having the right breast pump is essential to ensure that you can express milk efficiently and comfortably. When choosing a breast pump for exclusive pumping, there are several factors to consider, such as comfort, efficiency, portability and the level of suction.
Pumps To Help Build And Maintain Your Supply
With exclusive pumping, the breast pump is the only method of milk removal. A pump with strong and adjustable suction is necessary for effective milk removal.1,2,3 This will allow you to empty your breasts more thoroughly and in less time. A double electric pump will allow you to pump both breasts at the same time, saving time and increasing milk output.1,2,3 Examples of these are: Motif Luna, Spectra S2, Medela Pump In Style. Some high powered pumps have a battery option. This can be an internal rechargeable battery or with a battery pack. For the best stimulation and strongest motor you should plug the pump into the outlet while pumping when available. Some examples: Motif Luna with battery, Spectra S1, Spectra Synergy Gold, Zomee Z2.
Pumps For On-The-Go
After about four to six weeks when the supply is established, you can use a wearable pump that runs on battery power.1,2,3 Some of these have a battery option for on-the-go after the supply is established. Wearable pumps and pumps run on battery alone are not recommended for exclusive pumping in the first two to four weeks. After your breast milk supply is established these pumps can be useful for on-the-go pumping. Some examples: Elvie, Elvie Stride, Willow, Medela Freestyle Flex, Momcozy Wearable, Lansinoh Discreet Duo,
Backup Pump
In case you forget a pump part, your pump battery dies or your pump accidentally breaks it is a good idea to have a backup pump on hand. This type of pump is used to manually or passively remove milk from the breasts. Some examples: Medela Harmony, Lansinoh Manual, Philips Avent Manual, Haakaa Silicone Pump.
Don’t Forget About the Warranty
Consider how long you want to provide breast milk for your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding up to two years or longer.4,5 Taking into consideration your breastfeeding goals and available warranties is important so that you are protecting your investment.
