Needing Help? The Importance of Working with an IBCLC

Breastfeeding is natural, but it is not always easy. So who can you turn to if you feel like you need support? Many moms turn to friends, family, or even social media. But sometimes you need an expert’s advice and guidance.

What is an IBCLC?

IBCLCs are healthcare professionals who specialize in breastfeeding. They work with mothers and babies to help them achieve their breastfeeding goals.1

There are many places you can meet with an IBCLC:

  • Hospital or birthing center
  • Doctor’s offices
  • Virtually
  • In-home visits
  • Public health programs
  • Support groups
  • Breastfeeding classes

What Training does an IBCLC have?

An IBCLC must take college level health classes, 95 hours of lactation education, and complete up to 1000 hours of clinical practice. They must also pass an exam.1

What can an IBCLC do for you?

You can see an IBCLC for many reasons.1 You may just want reassurance that you’re doing great. Many mothers like to check in during pregnancy, early postpartum time, or before a big milestone like returning to work.

IBCLCs can help you with concerns such as:1

  • Milk supply
  • Baby’s weight
  • Positioning and latch
  • Sore nipples
  • Engorgement
  • Mastitis and plugged ducts
  • Medication safety during breastfeeding
  • Pumping Help

Will my Insurance Pay for an IBCLC?

Yes! Because of the Affordable Care Act, health insurance plans must cover breastfeeding support, counseling, and pumps for the duration of breastfeeding.2 These services can be provided before and after birth. Aeroflow Breastpumps offers a wide variety of breast pumps and can help you get a breast pump through your insurance.
